Office of Board of School Examiners. Elyria, Ohio, 1865. Catalog Record | Enlarge Image | Adopt a Book Home

This results card is one of the few in the collection that records a failure.  In order to teach in the public schools, candidates had to pass a series of tests administered by local school examiners.  Miss Aldrich of Elyria, Ohio, did not pass and received this rather stiff form letter with her scores and the somewhat crushing statement “below the standard.”  While Aldrich was clearly a strong reader, it was grammar that did her in -- she earned only 3 of the 10 points in that category.
