Dipper missing

Description

Trompe l'oeil image of various Civil War supplies hanging from a door by Boston artist Darius Cobb. A rusted canteen, a Union hat and a knapsack hang from a white door. At the bottom is a note pinned on the door that reads "dipper missing" with a sketch of a tin cup.
By the 1880s, nostalgia and patriotism for the Civil War was growing, and Prang and other printing firms marketed prints like this one to war veterans and their families. Between 1886 and 1888, Prang published a set of eighteen Civil War battles after paintings by Julian O. Davidson and Thure de Thulstrup.
