Thy only wish, wish I thee in every place

Description

Winner of the first prize in the second Christmas card competition, this card was designed by Elihu Vedder, an American artist and illustrator. The card, dedicated to his wife, depicts a woman dressed in gold, with Medusa-like ribbons flying from her hair. The border is in shades of blue, green and gold. An article from the Cincinnati Daily Gazette of February, 24, 1881 describes the card: "a buxom, amuently robed woman, her two arms akimbo, the general tone brown. ... Several fantastically streaming long ribbons proceed from the mazes of her auburn hair. 'It is easy enough to see,' says the [New York] Post, "art is advancing when Elihu Vedder makes our Christmas cards." Vedder went on to design mosaics for Louis Comfort Tiffany, and painted the large murals in the reading room of the Libary of Congress in Washington, D.C.
