Chickens I.

Description

After being unsuccessful with his first two sets of landscape chromos, Prang published this charming scene of baby chicks by Arthur F. Tait in 1866, which proved to be a big seller. In Prang's quarterly publication "Prang's Chromo," Christmas, 1869, he published newspaper reviews of the print:

"The Boston commercial bulletin said 'The little chicks are as like nature as they could be made, without the intervention of a hen.' The Baltimore sun said, '...The coloring is rich and beautiful; and the whole picture presents an appearance of artistic finish, and possesses a life-like air that could hardly be surpassed.'"

Prang would continue to successfully sell animal-themed prints after Tait for the next two decades.
