Title

Children's Favorite, Animals & Birds

Description

First published in 1866, this copy of Children’s Favorite Animals & Birds was retained as a plate house copy by McLoughlin Brothers and was filed in its archives for reference. The book was one of six titles in the Favorite Series, which retailed at thirty-seven cents each. The series was promoted as “beautiful picture books for the young, printed in oil colors” issued on “stiff board covers.” This series was one of the earliest where McLoughlin highlighted the illustrator, artist Justin H. Howard (fl. 1856–1880), who created the images for each title in the series. In the future, McLoughlin would more actively engage and promote American illustrators in the development of its picture book line.
