Civil War Envelopes

No.11 Movement of the army from Washington to Richmond. Catalog record

During the American Civil War, printers created pictorial envelopes decorated with flags, regimental insignia, portraits of war-time figures, and caricatures. These envelopes, first created for use in the mail, quickly became popular with collectors.

The envelopes are about 3 x 5" in size, and the majority were published primarily in  New York and Boston.

The Society's collection of over 3,000 envelopes is representative of the range of political and military themes that were popular during the Civil War era.
