1922-2020
Bud Bailyn (elected October 1960) died August 7, 2020. Bailyn served as Adams University Professor Emeritus as well as James Duncan Phillips Professor of Early American History Emeritus at Harvard, where he taught for forty years. His research interests included immigration in early American life, the effects of British and European culture on Americans, and the role of pamphlets in revolutionary thinking. His book The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution (1967) won the Pulitzer Prize and the Bancroft Prize in 1968; he won a second Pulitzer in 1987 for Voyagers to the West (1986) and was awarded a National Humanities Medal in 2010.
