Carl Kaestle died January 5, 2023. Professor emeritus of education, history, and public policy at Brown University, Kaestle was a preeminent scholar in the history of American education and the history of the book in America. He co-edited with Janice A. Radway A History of the Book in America, volume 4, Print in Motion: The Expansion of Publishing and Reading in the United States, 1880- 1940 (2009), for the collaborative series organized by AAS. Kaestle’s many honors and accomplishments included grants from the National Institute of Education, the Spencer Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Guggenheim Foundation. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Education.
