Mason I. Lowance died September 15, 2022. A prolific scholar of early American literature, Lowance was professor emeritus of English at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and author of thirteen books, including the The Language of Canaan: Metaphor and Symbol in New England from the Puritans to the Transcendentalists (1980). Lowance was among the first class of AAS fellows in 1972-73 (at that time funded by the U.S. Steel Foundation), and he held a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship in 1976-77 and a Kate B. and Hall J. Peterson Fellowship in 1989-90. He was also awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, among others.
