David Stam died February 7, 2023. Stam’s fourdecade career as a librarian began during his time in the United States Navy, when his final assignment was as librarian of the USS Galveston. He held library positions at the New York Public Library (NYPL), Marlboro College in Vermont, the Newberry Library, and Johns Hopkins University before returning to NYPL as the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the Research Libraries in the late 1970s. In 1986 he became university librarian at Syracuse University, a post he held for a dozen years. His passion was the print culture of polar expedition, about which he developed a database on explorers’ reading and wrote several books.
