Sam Bass Warner Jr. died January 22, 2023. A distinguished historian of American cities, Warner wrote several books focused on Boston that reflected his commitment to socially conscious urban planning, including Streetcar Suburbs: The Process of Growth in Boston, 1870-1900 (1962). He taught at Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Michigan, Boston University, Brandeis University, and the Massachusetts Institute for Technology. He was awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Rockefeller Foundation among others. A citizen scholar, Warner served on the advisory councils of the United States National Archives and the Committee on Basic Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences.
