Françoise Basch died March 6, 2023. A scholar of English literature and the history of women and the family and a pioneer of feminist studies in France, she was professor emerita at the University of Paris, Paris VII-Denis Diderot. In 1975, she founded the first feminist studies group in France. As a Samuel Foster Haven Fellow (1983-84) and as a research associate (1984-85), Basch studied “Critics of the Family in Mid-19thCentury America” at AAS. This research informed her 1986 article “Women’s Rights and Wrongs of Marriage,” as well as her book, Rebelles Américaines au Xixe Siecle: ‘Mariage, Amour Libre Et Politique’ (1990).
