Albert Cowdrey died August 21, 2022. Cowdrey was a writer across genres. As historian for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Army Center of Military History and as chief of the U.S. Army’s Special History Branch, he wrote several books with a focus on the history of military medicine. He was more widely known for his fiction, including the historical novel Elixir of Life (1965), the science fiction novel Crux (2004), and dozens of short stories. Cowdrey was the only writer honored by both the American Historical Association (Herbert Feis Award, 1984) and the World Fantasy Convention (World Fantasy Award, 2002).
