John Shy died April 8, 2022. A scholar of AngloAmerican military history and a graduate of the United States Military Academy, Shy was on the University of Michigan’s history department faculty from 1967 until his retirement in 1995. His books included Toward Lexington: The Role of the British Army in the Coming of the American Revolution (1965) and A People Numerous and Armed: Reflections on the Military Struggle for American Independence (1976). Shy served on the U.S. Department of the Army Historical Advisory Committee and received the 2002 Samuel Eliot Morison Prize for lifetime achievements from the Society for Military History.
