William Howard Adams

1926-2023

W. Howard Adams died July 5, 2023. An attorney by education, Adams enjoyed a long career in support of the arts and culture, beginning in his home state of Missouri, and was particularly interested in Thomas Jefferson and landscape architecture. His professional roles included serving as special assistant to the director of the National Gallery of Art (beginning in 1969), where he curated the bicentennial exhibition “The Eye of Thomas Jefferson,” and as adjunct professor in Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and the Cooper Union’s Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture.
