Brainerd Prescott Emery (1865-1917) was active as an amateur journalist in Newburgh, New York, and worked in New York state as an editor and bookkeeper. Both the New York State census for 1875 and the U.S. census for 1880 identify Emery as female indicating that Emery was assigned female at birth. Around 1883 Emery was identified as male in both legal and social contexts. Published by seventeen-year-old New York City amateur journalist Jahial Parmly Paret (1870-1952); he became a professional tennis player and later a sportswriter.
