The Juvenile Rambler is a handwritten newspaper edited by George E. Balch and Henry Hudson in Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts during 1833. It was published monthly at a price of 2 cents.
It included puzzles, riddles, poems, anecdotes, borrowed articles from the Newburyport Herald, memoranda, general and marriage notices, a wanted section, and advertisements. One of the articles is in support of House of Representatives candidate Hon. Caleb Cushing. They included a joke submitted by a New Orleans correspondent referring to the politician as "Cushion," saying "But we are sorry to say that he and all our friends are disappointed for this time in not seeing in the Hall of Representatives so bright so splendid an orname." Some of the correspondents mentioned include Sally Mander, H.M., William K. Titcomb, and C.H. Balch Jr.
George Edward Balch was born on August 7, 1822 in Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts, to William and Hannah (Stone) Balch. Balch became a ship captain at the age of 22 after graduating from Exeter Academy. He married Elizabeth Johnson Le Breton (1826-1899) on October 21, 1852. Balch died on August 23, 1889 in his hometown of Newburyport. Henry James Hudson was born on June 29, 1821 in Newburyport to John R. and Hannah Hudson. He married Hannah E. Blake on July 25, 1854 in Chelsea, Essex County, Massachusetts.
