The Fountain is a handwritten newspaper edited by Frank and George Sears around 1850.
On the cover of the paper, they wrote "Motto. Large streams from little fountains flow. Devoted to. Literature, science, and the arts. Terms. Attention. No discount to clubs." In the editorial, they stated that the purpose of the paper was not to please the masses but rather to "come to you who love the youth, and love to see them treading in the ways of wisdom, and in the path of happinesss and honor. To you who desire to see the cause of education prosper, and who are ready to cheer the scholar on with a look, at last, of appreciation."
They mostly include moralistic reflections and critiques, especially on the use of foul language, smoking and chewing tobacco, beggars and the poor, education, the history of the country, and printing. Other contributers are listed, among them Ellen J. and Alice Crum, Emma J. Nash, Mary Harrington, Emma Sears, Antoinette Stevens, and Margaret Costlow.
