The Echo

The Echo is a handwritten newspaper published in Canterbury, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, during 1853. Most of the articles are moralistic and religious reflections with themes of school and education, death, and marriage included throughout.

Two of the contributors wrote articles about marriage, the first one, Miss Judkins, denouncing marriage and married couples, while the second, Kate Murphery, responded to Judkins' article, criticizing her opinions and defending marriage. In a different article, contributor Melvina wrote about her experience on her first day of school as a child. She describes her thoughts in detail, as well as the teachers and other children. There are also puzzles included in the paper. The contributors are listed as Miss Judkins, Annette, Ellah, Zeta, Ella, Folly, Pheba, Kate Murphery, and Melvina.
