Eastern Star

The Eastern Star is a handwritten newspaper published weekly by J. Whittle during 1855 in Deering, Hillsborough County, N.H. The a cover was addorned with caligraphy by John F. Chase. Chase was born about 1835 in Deering, N.H. and married Mary Alvery in 1857.

The contributors only included first names, initials, or possibly pseudonyms, including Hirsain, L.F., Luella, Catherine, and Kate. They wrote puzzles and reflections on various topics such as childhood, school, free time, old age, smoking, and death. The theme of death is prevalent throughout the newspaper, especially in the last article titled "My Friend and Her Grave." In it, Luella wrote about coping with loss, mourning, and trauma.
