The Free Thinker

The Free Thinker was a manuscript newspaper published by the South Weare Lyceum during 1862 in South Weare, Hillsborough County, N.H. It includes poems, correspondence about local news, and articles about the calling of N.H. volunteers for the Union during the Civil War and denunciations of tobacco and alcohol. Some of the contributors include initials of their names or probable synonyms, including G.S., Avon, J.W.D., and W.T. One of the contributors who wrote a temperance letter from Franconia Notch signed it as "The Old Man of the Mountain."
