The Casket is assumed to be published by students of Hallock Hill in Ausable, Clinton County, New York during 1863. They wrote about a variety of different subjects, including nature, particularly the woods and snow, Thanksgiving, morality, especially about the dangers of idleness, education, religion, the Civil War, and courtship. Named contributors include Annie, Phebe, Nettie, Hattie, Ollive, A.M., Maud, and Warren Harkness (1848-1937). They wrote poems, correspondence, and advertisements. One of the poems described the sad story of a Civil War soldier who left his friends and family to fight in the war and eventually died in battle. The advertisement included was written by Jamisna Jane Slam of Glenstown, Nebraska seeking to find a good husband. Another love letter was written by Dan, opening with "Dear belovid [sic] I took my opportunity 2 write u to inform u jest [sic] how I lov [sic] u and furthermore inquire about your health and how you get on this cold wether [sic] do u like the techer [sic] or not say it lik [sic] so now all about it..."
