Wheeler's Defeat, 1675; Where!

The article presents an exploration into the location of a 1675 battle between the Nipmuck Indians and the Massachusetts colonists during King Philip's War. Details are given describing the colonists' defeat under the leadership of the colonial captain Thomas Wheeler, citing Wheeler's personal accounts of the battle. Questions are raised seeking to identify the location of the conflict through cross examination of the historiography of the Brookfield, Massachusetts region. The author's theory of the conflict being near New Braintree at the Winnimisset meadows is given.
