The article presents an exploration into the history of monetary systems in world history, focusing on the trends toward unification. Details are given outlining several episodes in financial history, including the practices of ancient Rome, those used across Europe during the Middle Ages, and the development of the English pound. In each situation the treatment of different coinage and material standards is reviewed. The transition of silver to the gold standard is particularly addressed.
