The article discusses the relationship between ministers and their parishes in New England during a period of currency depreciation. The author discussed financial difficulties faced by minister Jeremy Belknap after depreciation rendered the salary he received as a minister in Dover, New Hampshire to be insufficient to support his family. After the parish failed to pay him amounts he was owed, he declared his service to the parish to be voluntary and requested his contract be dissolved. Debts owed to ministers such as Jonathan Cushing and John Eliot by parishes are noted.
