The article presents an historical overview of Chequamegon Bay, Wisconsin up until the mid 19th-century. Details are given outlining several phases of the history of the region, focusing on the transitions which the region felt after the establishment of the Catholic mission of La Pointe du St. Esprit by the Jesuit Claude-Jean Allouez. The expansion of the jurisdiction and influence of La Pointe is described. Subjects also addressed include the role of the Chippewa Indians in the region and the rise of trading settlements under the initial leadership of the French merchant Michel Cadotte and later with the American Fur Company.
