The article focuses on Antoine François Saugrain de Vigni, a French scientist and explorer who later became a physician in Saint Louis, Missouri. He was born in Paris France in 1763 and later studied physic, surgery, and mineralogy. His first visit to the U.S. was at the invitation of Don Galvez, Spanish Viceroy of Mexico. In 1788 he traveled from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Louisville, Kentucky on an expedition. After the start of the French Revolution, he returned to the U.S. and became an American citizen. He died in St. Louis in 1821. Also presented is a reprint of a translation of a letter written by Saugrain to friends about his 1788 expedition.
