Several Great Libraries.

The article presents a description and history of eighteen major libraries throughout Europe. Libraries are divided by their type and geography. The ruins of the monastery libraries of medieval England, such as those at Durham and Lincoln are mentioned. The private family library of Sir Walter Scott at the Abbotsford House outside Melrose, Scotland is examined regarding its architecture and folio collections. The contemporary library of the British Museum is also discussed in depth. Several other European institutions, both historical and contemporary, are also reviewed.
