Manteo and Jack Straw.

The article presents an exploration into the etymology and identity of the colonial Roanoke, North Carolina name Jack Straw. Comments are given highlighting the diverse presence of the name for locations and in historical documents tracing throughout colonial times. The author asserts that Jack Straw is an alternative name for the Native American Manteo, the first Christian convert and companion to the explorer Sir Walter Raleigh during the 1580s. Documents chronicling Manteo's travels to England and later connections to the name Jack Straw are provided. Additional mention is given to the continuation of the surname Jackstraw in Manteo's genealogy.
