The Confederacy and the Transyaal.

The article presents discussion of the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and the end of the U.S. Civil War in 1865. Comments are given comparing the situation of the Civil War to the contemporary events of the South African Boer War. An examination into the conditions of the Confederate military at the end of the conflict is provided and the decision of Lee to surrender is discussed in depth. The experiences and decisions which led Lee to surrender in April 1865 are described and reflected upon from personal testimonies and primary accounts gathered by the author.
