The article discusses the participation of American soldiers in a battle in which Mayan natives rebelled against Spanish colonists in Yucatan, Mexico. The author discusses the invasion of Yucatan under the conquistador Francisco de Montejo and how Mayan leaders, known as caciques or batabs, planned a rebellion against the white colonists. Following acts of violence by Mayan rebels, Spanish authorities requested assistance from the U.S., who secretly dispatched soldiers, such as Edward Pinkus and Michael Foster, to help fight the Mayans.
