Early South American Newspapers.

The article discusses the history of newspaper in South America. The author comments that the capture of the ship "The Dainty," commanded by Richard Hawkins, inspired the first news publications in South America. Printer Jeronimo de Contreras printed news-sheets from Lima, Peru. His son, José de Contreras, printed books and newspapers and was appointed as a royal printer of Spain. The collections of the Lenox Library and the John Carter Brown Library, as well as the book "La Imprenta en Lima," by José Toribio Medina, offer information on newspaper printing in South America. The publications of pamphlets offering information on special events is also noted. The theft of jewels from a church led to the publication of the newspaper "Gazeta de Lima."
