The article presents a profile of the religious customs of the Macheyenga Indians of Eastern Peru. Introductory comments are given describing the environmental conditions and resources of their territory and noting how it has effected their manners and customs. Subjects addressed include their lack of religious rituals or superstitions in regards to the care of the dead, their traditions concerning the souls of the dead and their connection to the native red deer, and their attitudes of the soul and of a god.
