Indian Myths of the Northwest.

The article discusses the recording of Indian mythology from the northwest region of the U.S. The author comments that intolerant attitudes of early settlers in America hindered the collection of myths from Indian tribes. He discusses how the similarity of Indian names for different mountains and rivers has caused confusion. Explorer Gabriel Franchere wrote about a Chinook legend regarding the creation of mankind. Explorer Charles Wilkes, author James G. Swan and soldier Theodore Winthrop also wrote about Indian legends. Ethnologist Franz Boas collected Chinook stories from Indian Charlie Cultee.
