The article presents a discussion of the hornbook in education during the Modern period, particularly highlighting its use in the early American colonies and at the beginning of the United States. An overview is provided of the earliest documented cases and predecessors to the hornbook, citing rudimentary lessons attached on boards from the 1500s in Europe. The great popularity and common methods of using hornbooks during the Modern period are highlighted. Discussion is given relating to the likelihood of the earliest pioneers including hornbooks in their supplies for the education of their children. Multiple images of antique hornbooks which were maintained from the 1700s and early 1800s are also included.
