The Press in British Guiana.

The article discusses the history of journalism in British Guiana. The author discusses the distribution of information by circulars presented at plantations by slaves and notes the repression of criticism against the local government. Attorney J.C. de la Coste established a printing press and post office on the island of Demerara and published a newspaper until the business failed. After British forces gained control of the islands, a printing press was established to print government notices as well as the newspaper the "Essequebo and Demerary Gazette." When the Batavian Republic regained control of the colonies, printer Nicolaas Volkerts printed a Dutch government newspaper and competed with English printer Edward James Henery.
