The Making of the Republic of Vermont, the Fourteenth State.

The article describes the history of Vermont as a republic. The author discusses how settlers in Vermont obtained a land grant from the governor of New Hampshire but were later informed they had to acquire grants from the authorities of the New York province after the region was declared to be under the jurisdiction of New York, leading to the formation of the Green Mountain Boys, a group led by soldier Ethan Allen to protect the claims of settlers. Settler Ira Allen helped form the land acquisition firm Onion River Co. and supported the formation of a separate state. Conventions were held to assign militia officers, establish a compact, and approve a declaration of independence. The participation of Vermont in the Battle of Bennington during the U.S. Revolutionary War is discussed.
