The article discusses the American Council Of Learned Societies, an association of humanities and social science organizations. The Council is composed of societies such as the American Antiquarian Society (AAS), the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences of Boston, which each contribute funds to the Council and are represented by delegates. The Council is also financed by donations and participates in the International Union of Academies to promote humanistic work through international cooperation. Surveys carried out by the Council to collect information from other U.S. academic societies and to investigate humanistic research in the U.S. are noted.
