The article focuses on seventeenth-century minister Lewis Hughes, one of the first English settlers of the island of Bermuda under the 1612 charter of the the Plantation of the Somer Islands. The article provides a description of the political, religious, and social life of the early settlement of Bermuda. An account is presented of the c. 1602 witchcraft trial of "Mother" Elizabeth Jackson in London, England. Also presented is an annotated bibliography of the writings of Lewis Hughes which includes "A Letter Sent Into England From the Summer Ilands," "Demands for Time Spent in the Services of the Sommer Ilandas Company," and "Certaine Grievances: Or, The Errours of the Service-Booke.
