The article presents a biography of New England poet Nathaniel Bolton. The author notes that during his career as a rural schoolmaster in Oakham, Massachusetts, Bolton produced poems without the support of or social contact with other authors. He served in the military before marrying Jane Thompson. The role of Bolton's children Charles, Huldah, Oliver, Barnum and Abishai Bolton in his life is noted. He wrote poems to commemorate the deaths of local residents as well as events such as the surrender of British general John Burgoyne during the Revolutionary War. He also wrote a poem opposing the atheism of author Thomas Paine and often expressed his religious faith through poetry.
