A Puritan Counter-Reformation.

The article compares the Counter-Reformation with Puritanism in New England. The author comments on how the conflict between the Catholic Church and Protestant reformers led to a restatement of orthodoxy by the Council of Trent and notes the role of the Society of Jesus in clerical education and missionary work during the Reformation. He discusses how intellectual changes in New England resulted in the rejection of Calvinist doctrines, increased divisions between liberal and conservative churches and the rise of Unitarianism. Attempts to organize Calvinists against Unitarianism and the use of religious publications to promote Puritan ideals are noted.
