The article presents an historical overview of a group of dairy farmers of southern Rhode Island during the 17th and 18th centuries, commonly known as the "Narragansett Planters." Details are given outlining the environmental conditions and political jurisdiction of colonial Narragansett Bay. Profiles are given of several early pioneering settlers who established themselves in the region, including Richard Smith, Thomas Mumford, and Roger Williams. Accounts are also given of later families who became prominent in the 18th century, such as the Robinsons, the Potters, and the Coles. Extensive discussion of the agricultural practices and commercial infrastructure created in the region is provided, along with comments on its eventual decline.
