The article presents an examination into the history of the printing press and mass media of Providence, Rhode Island in the 18th century. Details are given highlighting the establishment of the first printing press in the city by William Goddard. An overview of the various services provided by Goddard is given, including the production of blank legal forms, the release of an annual almanac, and the printing of "The Providence Gazette and Country Journal." The growth of the newspaper is also related, highlighting its use in political advertising, public administration, and in controversies such as the 1765 Stamp Act and an Anglican Episcopate incident of 1763. The additional industrial expansions which resulted from to the press' arrival are also examined.
