The First Century of New England Verse.

The article presents an exhaustive historical review of 17th century American poetry of the New England colonies. The author discusses biographical sketches and works by dozens of writers made up of both English colonists and native born authors from the 1638 work of Thomas Tillam to the early 18th century verse of Benjamin Tompson. Major groups of poets are divided by generations of arrivals and analyzed by prominent characteristics and themes in their works. Dozens of examples of works from the period are also included, such as "Elegy of Seth Flint," by William Adams, "Claudius Gilbert," by John Wilson, and "Upon the first sight of New-England," by Thomas Tillam.
