The article presents an exploration into the characteristics and development of the American Loyalists faction of the United States Revolutionary War. Specific focus is given to the shifts in social and political values and discourse between 1765 and 1783, framing the discussion within the spectrum of conservative and liberal sub-groups. Common groups of Loyalists such as Quakers and nonviolent objectors, Anglican clergy, and wealthy landholders and merchants are discussed collectively with explanation for their actions and rationales to different stages of the conflict.
