The article presents discussion of the correspondence shared between the Colonial Virginia planter John Custis and the London, England based horticulturist Peter Collinson in the 1730s and 1740s. A biographical sketch of each individual is given, focusing on the areas in which the two shared common interests and communication. Collinson's prominence in the scientific community of London is highlighted along with his many letters shared with fellow intellectuals of his age. Details regarding Custis' life in Williamsburg, Virginia are also given, highlighting his many domestic challenges and landscaping pursuits.
