Devoted to a survey and appreciation of the work of the late Clarence Brigham, former librarian of the society. He expressed his philosophy as one of collecting actively in limited fields. His early collections of almanacs and of early American imprints, however trivial, and of American local history were in fields not yet recognized by most professional historians as having potential value as source material. In 1912 he began collecting Paul Revere engravings; in 1955 he published his book on the subject. "Considering how much he achieved with the funds available to him, Clarence Brigham was certainly the greatest collector of his generation." Portrait.
