Charles Sealsfleld, "The Greatest American Author.".

Traces the controversy over the existence and identity of Sealsfield, first brought to the attention of the American public by an article in the 'Boston Daily Advertiser' on 29 March 1844. He is identified as Carl Postl, an Austrian Roman Catholic priest who fled from the Church and from Prague in 1824 and came to America. His anonymous volume, 'Austria as It Is' (London, 1824), made him a wanted man in that country, but his descriptions of life in America were translated into several languages and widely reprinted. They are still read in Europe but virtually unknown in America.
