James Blaine Hedges.

Born 10 November 1891 in Bowling Green, Missouri, James Blaine Hedges died 13 October 1965 in Providence, Rhode Island. A Frederick Jackson Turner disciple and 1924 Harvard Ph.D., Hedges spent a lifetime teaching American history, retiring in 1962. Besides articles, his published works include 'Henry Villard and the Railways of the Northwest' (1930); 'The Federal Railway Land Subsidy Policy of Canada' (1934); 'Building the Canadian West' (1939); 'Westward Expansion' (1949), with Ray A. Billington; and 'The Browns of Providence Plantation: Colonial Years' (1952), as well as the American history section of the 'Encyclopedia of World History' (1940). He was on the board of editors of the 'American Historical Review' (1950-55), and also a member of a number of professional historical associations.
