The Cruise of the Schooner Tamana, 1805-1807.

In the early 19th century, the California coast with its docile Indians and ill-enforced system of foreign trade restrictions offered profitable trade possibilities to Yankee skippers like Captain John Thomas Hudson of the 45-ton topsail schooner 'Tamana.' Merchandise from New England and China was exchanged with Spanish missionaries, ranchers, officials, soldiers, and Indians in California for sea otter skins, ship provisions, and cash. Based on an unpublished ship's log in the Henry E. Huntington Library; 35 notes.
